Easter Sewing: A Smorgasbord of Free Patterns & Ideas for your Celebration

Easter Sewing Pin

Hi everyone happy spring! it doesn't

quite feel like that here in Connecticut.

I think it's about 40° outside but the

daffodils are up and Easter is only a few

weeks away. So here is a Smorgasbord of ideas for you for Easter - some sewing ideas, smocking ideas, craft ideas, a book recommendation and even a dessert recommendation! Everything is written out here, but the video is at the bottom if you prefer to listen.

Free Smocking Plates for Easter Sewing:

Let's start with a variety of free smocking plates for you. I know time is tight, but there is still time to smock that Easter dress. I have a couple different picture smocking designs and a couple geometric ones. First up is this adorable free bunny plate by Michiei Mooney. It can be used for a square yoke dress or a bishop.

The next free design I have fo you is from Pink Hollybush patterns, and in fact the rest of the ones I have for you are from Pink Hollybush. It is this Cute Ducky smocking plate.

I am showing it here on knit garment but of course you don't have to do it on a knit. You can use it with a square yoke or on a bishop, and of course it is appropriate for a girl or a boy. There is also a YouTube video tutorial on the curved smocking technique that is used to form the water under the ducks.

If you are smocking for an older girl then I have two options for you. The first is Reese's Garden of Hearts which is a geometric smocking plate with just a touch of picture smocking with the hearts. I think it is a lovely spring plate that would be perfect for Easter.

If you are smocking for an even older girl, then consider the Princess Charlotte plate.

There is a tutorial on how to recreate the dress she is wearing in the photo using the July Flowers pattern from Pink Hollybush Designs. The free download and tutorial includes the smocking plate and the pattern piece for the flutter sleeve.

Speaking of the July Flowers dress, I sewed this dress a few years ago for a YouTube tutorial and my granddaughter is going to wear it for Easter this year. Here is the complete playlist of tutorials showing how to sew every aspect of this dress. Where my granddaughter lives it could be 80 degrees on Easter or it could be 40 degrees, so I am planning to sew up the free Vega Sweater pattern from Ikatee patterns in a soft French Terry for her in case this Easter is on the cooler side.

Easter Crafting Ideas:

For some fun crafts to add some whimsy to your Easter table, or possibly make with your child or grandchild, EFI Little Things has several free spring patterns that I think would be perfect.

If you have a daughter or granddaughter who is on the younger side, she might like a little bunny accessory. Here is a quick and easy 10 minute project to sew up this fun little

bunny hair clip from Easy Peasy Creative.  If I still.have some of that bunny fabric left my granddaughter is getting one of these as well.

Easter Book Recommendation:

I promised you a book recommendation and this was one of my daughter's favorites and so I just ordered a copy to send to my granddaughter along with the dress and the sweater. It's called The Country Bunny and the Little Golden Shoes.

(this is an affiliate link & I receive a small commission if you purchase through the link.)

The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes book

It was written back in 1939 and it's about a mother bunny who hopes to be picked as one of the five Easter Bunnies to deliver the eggs all around the world. In order to be picked as one of the five bunnie, a bunny must be wise, kind and swift. Nobody thought that a little country bunny who has 21 baby bunnies could end up as an Easter bunny. I don't want to spoil the ending but it is a sweet story. I hope my granddaughter is going to love it.

Easter Dessert Idea:

Last but not least when my brother and I were growing up my Aunt would make us shape cakes for our birthday. A great Easter dessert for your table would be a cake shaped like a Bunny!

They are actually very easy to make. Homan at Home has the directions for this fun cake as well as several other Easter themed cakes.
