I am asked all the time, do I need a serger to sew knit fabrics? My answer - absolutely not! All you need is a basic zig zag sewing machine! Here is my rationale - if you would prefer to listen, the video can be found at the bottom of this post.
I love my serger and I use it all the time, but usually to finish the seams, not for construction. A serger just doesn't allow me to be as precise in my sewing, especially when going around the corners. In fact, I think a serger is rather overrated. Yes, the seam it sews will be stretchy, but that seam will also be looser. Press it open and you will probably be able to see the threads holding the seam together. While it might be possible to sew a basic T-shirt or a bag with just a serger, most other garments will require a sewing maching. In fact, all of Pink Hollybush patterns require a sewing machine!
So what do you use if you don't have a serger? Just your basic Zig Zag sewing machine. For all Pink Hollybush Patterns I recommend a slight zig zag stitch with a width of .5 - 1.5 and a length of 2.5. It will look like almost like a straight stitch. You can easily test these settings (a I recommend that you do before starting on a project) by taking a swatch of knit fabric, fold it in half and run stitch down length of it. Then give it a slight tug. You will notice that the fabric has some give. It is that simple!

If you would like some more help getting started sewing with knit fabrics, I have 2 resources for you. Check out the new Just the Basics: Getting Started Sewing Knits Mini Course. This series of 4 videos will walk you through the basics so you are prepared to sew your first knit garment.
If you prefer having a resource at your fingertips, my more in-depth Enjoying the World of Knits Book, Fabric pack and video will help you execute a variety of different knit garments.
I hope you break out your sewing machine and give sewing with knits a try - no serger needed! Here is the video if you prefer to listen.
