When we released our first smocking pattern, Mama and Baby Giraffe, I promised more were on the way. Our next Smocking Plate is completed and now available in the store! Little Birdy is an advanced beginner smocking plate. It uses basic smocking stitches including Cable, Trellis, Wave and Flowerette. The Little Bird is a beginning Stacked Cable figure. The pattern is 11 pages long and comes with a stitch glossary that includes step by step photos showing how to complete each of the smocking stitches. I have labeled this smocking plate as advanced beginner because some familiarity with counting pleats and reading a smocking graph is helpful, especially for the Trellis/Cable combination. My goal in designing this plate and all of the Pink Hollybush kits is to enable you to learn and love the art of smocking!
Little Birdy was designed to coordinate with our Little Bird Broadcloth fabric. The dress is a basic square yoke dress. The pattern is Lee from Children's Corner, with the sleeve from the Music Class blouse from Oliver + S because I wanted a more tailored sleeve.
You could also use the sleeve pattern included in Liesl Gibson's Building Block Dress Book. The collar is made from our Medallion Broadcloth. The collar, sleeves and inset is piped with orange piping made with Kona Cotton to match the fabric and floss. I hope you enjoy Little Birdy. Happy Smocking!
