A Free Heart Pocket for My Valentine!

A heart pocket for my valentine

It is pouring buckets of rain here in Connecticut, so it's a great day to stay inside and sew! Today I have a quick Free Heart Pocket Design and Tutorial for you! This little pocket goes together quickly and can be added to a dress, jumper, shorts, or if you reduce the size, even a pair of jeans!

You will need:

2 pieces of material 6 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches. Fashion Fabric and Lining (large heart)

2 pieces of material 2 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches Fashion Fabric and Lining (small heart)

1 button

floss to match material

Number 8 Crewel Needle or a Number 7 Darner.

Heart Pattern, (make sure to set printer to "Auto Portrait/Landscape Mode")

Hearts cut out

You can see that I used a plain piece of muslin to line the big heart and a scrap of the dot to line the little heart. With right sides together and using 1/4 inch seam allowance, sew the big hearts together and the little hearts together, leaving a 1-2 inch opening on one long side. Turn right side out, press well and tuck in the seam allowances. Slip stitch the openings closed, or stitch them closed in the next step. Position the little heart on the center of the big heart, and using 3 strands of floss, blanket stitch the little heart to the big heart.

Attach the button to the center of the little heart. Position the pocket on the piece of clothing; in my case the Music Box Jumper.

Starting and stopping position on the heart

Beginning at the middle of the hump of the heart (represented by the pin in the photo), blanket stitch around the large heart using 3 strands of floss and catching both the pocket and the dress. Continue around to the center of the other hump of the heart. Once at the other pin, slip your hand in the pocket and continue to blanket stitch around the heart, but this time only stitching through the heart, and not catching the dress. Once you reach where you started, take the thread to the back of the dress and tie off.

That's it - let your child enjoy their pocket! The dress pictured is the Music Box Jumper by Oliver + S.
